Share the Light Winner

Siloam Mission

For more than 35 years, Siloam Mission has been a source of hope to those experiencing poverty and homelessness in Winnipeg. While they are known for offering meals for those in need, Siloam also provides other services, including emergency shelter and clothing.
But their mission doesn’t stop with food and clothing. Siloam is committed to helping those who need support in a variety of ways. They offer healthcare in their Saul Sair Health Centre and have a hygiene program where people can take a shower and do their own laundry. Though they are a Christian organization, they provide spiritual care and resources suited to all backgrounds and beliefs. They also have a therapeutic Arts and Wellness program, which provides an opportunity for people to express themselves through art.

Director of Development, Darren Nodrick, said the Share the Light donation will have a huge impact, “Here at Siloam, we often measure gifts like yours in meals. $3,500 is about 888 meals for folks experiencing poverty and homelessness.” He goes on to say, “Although we may measure money in meals, the impact is so much greater.”

Siloam Mission has found ways to support those in need not just on the day they need it, but to help them build a better future for themselves. They provide employee mentorships and coaching, as well as employment through their commercial laundry business, through their Building Futures Program. And their Transition Services team works one-on-one with individuals, connecting them with social services to support them on their journey toward healing and recovery.

And, still, there’s more. “We own and operate 85 units of deeply affordable, supportive housing at The Madison in the Wolseley neighbourhood,” says Nodrick, adding, “We also own and operate another 20 supportive recovery units for people exiting addictions programming who would likely have otherwise ended up back on the streets.”

When asked what this donation means to Siloam Mission, Nodrick said, “The bottom line is, none of this exists without our very generous donors like you! To all of you who nominated us, and to everyone who supports our sector, including our partner organizations, thank you! You really are making such a tremendous difference in the lives of our neighbours who need it most.”
