Soup’s On
Soup’s On is a soup kitchen in Steinbach that offers two important community programs. Their Supper Program serves two free evening meals per week, while the Lunch Program allows them to work with Steinbach area schools to offer a breakfast and lunch program for students who need it.
Born out of a need to serve those struggling with food insecurities in Southeastern Manitoba, Soup’s On has operated for more than a decade to provide a safe space for anyone in need of nourishment. Volunteers offer a judgement-free environment, filled with compassion, respect, and an abundance of graciousness.
Seeing a need in the community to provide meals for school-aged children, Soup’s On expanded their services to offer support in local schools. Founder and Manager, Joy Neufeld, says, “Making sure all our children have lunch does so much more than take away their hunger for a couple of hours. Consistent, daily support gives them an equal opportunity to learn.”
When asked what being chosen as a recipient of SCU’s Share the Light contest means to the organization, Neufeld said, “Receiving this $3,500 will allow us to support children living with food insecurities through providing a nutritious lunch, and breakfast if they need it.” But, she says, this nomination from the community will do so much more than provide financial support. “They told us they support what we do, giving us encouragement to keep going. The $3,500 will feed the children; the nomination will sustain us!”
